Tips for Wearing and Mixing Prints

Adding a Print or a Pattern to your look is an easy way to elevate any outfit.

Here are a few tips for starting off in the world of paying with prints:

Start With Foundation Prints

  • When we think of foundation prints, we think classic and simple. The prints that never go out of style and can be worn year after year such as stripes, polka dots, floral, and animal prints.
  • These are the perfect prints to begin with if you’re just starting out or looking to add some variety to your closet. For example, a striped top will pair well with classic denim for an easy look that can take you from day to night.

Layer and/or Let one print take center stage.

If you’re new to wearing prints, or want to dip your toe into a bolder look, start with something small and build from there. Going from wearing solid color to a paisley jumpsuit can be intimidated, but layering allows you to incorporate the bolder look comfortably.
  • For Example, If you love the floral trend, pick a dress in a print that appeals to you and wear it with solid-colored leggings or tights.

If you’re ready for mixing prints, there are several ways to approach print mixing:

  • Let one pattern take center stage. This can be done by using solids and neutrals alongside large prints—or by using simpler patterns as supporting pieces alongside a loud patterned piece (this works best when the supporting patterns are in similar color tones).

Keep the prints in balance.

When wearing multiple prints, keep the prints in balance. For example, don't pair a leopard print skirt with a zebra print top and polka dot shoes.  Instead, wear one statement piece, like leopard print pants, and pair it with solids or smaller prints.

Along those lines, if you want to wear two bold prints that are the same scale (like two large floral prints or two small stripes), keep them similar in color and style or You can mix  prints that are similar in tone to each other

Be sure to accessorize with your prints in mind.

When mixing prints, an important thing to keep in mind is accessorizing.

  • If you pair a printed top with printed pants, it's best to keep your accessories neutral. In this way, you'll tie the whole look together , accessories should match the colors of your prints, but they shouldn't overpower them.
  • If you're not sure what kind of accessories to wear with your print-on-print outfit, think about where you're going and how formal or informal the occasion is.
    • For a casual day out (maybe brunch with friends), a fun necklace might be all you need to complete the outfit.
    • If you're heading into work, focus on more subtle accessories like earrings or a bracelet that compliment rather than detract from your print-on-print getup.

That being said, if you want to add an extra flair and feel comfortable doing so, go ahead and play around with it!

Experiment and Have Fun!

Try on different combos until you find a look you like—and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Your eyes can adjust to prints that don’t look good together and could use a second opinion.

Remember  there are no rules around this trend!
